The book looks at new legislation and practice showing how different countries are coping with the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol as well as how they are complying with its obligations. In the topic of implementation the book does not only look at provider measures but likewise implementation of user measures in traditional user countries with a case study of the EU, namely the implementation of the EU Regulation 511/2014 on ABS and the operationalisation of user compliance measures in Germany. Fifteen country case studies are presented and a number of critical themes to the implementation, e.g. the issues of digital sequence information and possible cut-off points of provider rights in particular in the context of agricultural breeding.

The research project on this theme is still ongoing. The reports presented in this book are more or less descriptive summaries of the preliminary results of the research. The full reports containing analytical content and novel ideas of suggestions on how to resolve challenges confronted by countries in the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol and other arising issues e.g. on digital sequence information will be published in autumn 2020 by Springer in an edited book volume under the (provisional) title "Global transformations in the use of biodiversity for research and development. Post Nagoya Protocol implementation amid unresolved and arising issues".
